Skatefest 2004
January 24th, 2004
Mesa's first City sponsered Skateboarding competition Mesa has about 360 sunny days a year, so why did we get rain for days before the competition? It was cloudy and cold, I think the high was 50 or less. We heard that they had men with leaf blowers in the court, trying to dry it out.

Kenny, Carlos, J J Carlos placed 3rd in the competition.

Hundreds of People, Skaters, parents, friends, lined the fence, cheering
on those in the competition.

I am not going to elaborate too much, but hopefully the City of Mesa will get it together before they sponsor another event such as this.
Showing up for a timed skate competition, then asking if anyone has a watch with a timer to borrow....
allowing some skaters to do extra things "because I know this guy... and he's cool" the announcer calling out "tricks" he didn't know (the crowd let him know what they were)
Not having it organized, so there were sometimes two skaters in the bowl at one time, having extra skaters messing around, interfereing with those competing. Calling skaters by the wrong name, not having timing accurate, so skaters who had been told to have "1 minute" runs planned, were faced with having to fill an extra minute on the spot.... anyways... Mesa,, if you need it next year, contact me before the contest, I will get you a real stop watch!!!
All the skaters were great, as were the fans, everyone got along, cheering each other on, it really was great to see how the skaters respect each others abilities, and even though they were competeing with each other, they were still encouraging their own competition to do their best!!!!
All in all, my grades would be
Skaters A+
Skate fans A+
City of Mesa (or whomever actually organized it) D
Arizona sun D (it did peek out for a few minutes around 3)
Safety A (only injury was someone who got his arm stuck on the fence, not a skater.
